How much hair shedding is considered normal?

General Hair Loss Questions

Lately, I’ve been noticing more hair falling out—mostly in the shower and when I brush. It’s making me wonder if this is just normal shedding or the beginning of something more serious.

How much hair loss per day is actually considered normal? I know it’s around 100-120 based on my research, but are there any signs that might indicate it’s turning into hair thinning or something like telogen effluvium? Thanks!

You are correct that anywhere between 50 up to 150 hairs shedding per day is considered normal. Signs that something else besides normal follicle cycling causing shedding would include: more than 150 hairs per day, hairs coming out very easily with a slight pull, hairs of different length or color coming out, hairs from other parts of the body shedding, or if hair is shedding in patterns on the scalp. Anything in this realm should likely be evaluated by a hair loss specialist.
