Does scalp massage really help hair growth?

Asked by: 103 views General Hair Loss Questions

I’ve been reading a lot about how scalp massage can supposedly stimulate hair growth by increasing blood flow and loosening tight muscles. Some people swear by it, but others say it’s a waste of time. Has anyone here actually seen noticeable improvements from doing it regularly? Like new growth, thicker hair, or even just less shedding? Curious to hear real experiences

This is a bit of a complicated one. Scalp massages may, may help with hair growth or at least limiting hair loss. There have been two self-reported studies where patients experienced thicker hair and a stabilization of loss. This is thought to be through increased blood flow and the stimulation of pathways (mechanotransduction) which may help loss. However, evidence is limited and even those reporting improvements note they are limited. So it may do something and likely is not harmful, but I wouldn’t expect any miracles either.

I actually think I'm seeing a difference after using various scalp massage techniques. My massages mostly focus on my crown area. It's tough to 100% know, but the hair is definitely growing back there. Slowly, but surely. I massage the crown area just before bed for about 5 min each day. I simply cup my hand over my crown and gently squeeze all around that area.
