Does dutasteride cause weight gain?

I’ve been on dutasteride for a few months now to treat hair loss, and I feel like I’ve put on some weight. I’m not sure if it’s related or just a coincidence. Has anyone else noticed weight changes on this medication?

    Great question.

So, dutasteride should not directly cause weight gain. However, it may indirectly cause weight changes in a few ways:

First, it’s important to understand that these mechanisms of weight gain represent side effects from the medication and it’s important to follow-up with your prescriber if you begin to experience this.

One of the main potential side effects from dutasteride is fat redistribution from hormonal changes. Particularly in the chest area. This may cause the appearance of weight loss. Several other common side effects from dutasteride include change in libido/energy drive and mood changes. If changes in your energy or mood cause you to eat differently or stop exercising, this may cause weight gain as well.
