Yes, you can fly after a hair transplant, but there are a few important guidelines to consider.

When is it safe to fly after a hair transplant?

Most surgeons recommend waiting at least 24 to 48 hours before flying. This short waiting period allows the initial healing process to begin and helps reduce the risk of complications such as swelling or discomfort.

Why is it better to wait?

Flying too soon after your procedure can worsen swelling due to changes in cabin pressure. There is also a slightly higher risk of exposure to bacteria and infection in an airplane environment, which is not ideal when your scalp is healing. Additionally, the procedure area may be sensitive, and flying can cause discomfort or increase the chance of accidentally bumping your head.

Can you wear a hat while flying?

Most surgeons advise avoiding hats or anything that touches the transplanted area for the first 3 to 5 days. Wearing a hat too soon can interfere with graft survival or irritate the healing scalp.

What precautions should you take if you must fly soon after your procedure?

If flying is unavoidable, try to book a comfortable seat, avoid touching your scalp, stay hydrated, and avoid carrying or lifting heavy bags. Follow your clinic’s post-operative care instructions carefully, especially regarding hygiene and medication. If your transplant was performed abroad, your clinic should provide you with detailed aftercare guidance before your return flight.

I let patients fly essentially any time after surgery. Some patients really want to get home! I caution about covering the transplants, avoiding any kind of "bumping" of the transplant, and that the patient may need to get up frequently if they are given a saline spray to prevent scabbing after surgery (which can be difficult to take on the plane in general). However, typically the best time to fly home after a transplant tends to be about 24 hours after surgery. It's usually nice to rest and destress for a bit after surgery -- opposed to running right to the airport and getting on a plane. It's also nice to fly before any potential swelling begins, which is typically 48-72 hours post-op. But flying is typically safe anytime after a transplant. However, discuss this with your specific clinic and follow their instructions closely.

What's it like going through the airport? Do they make you take your hat off or any "head covering" that you may be wearing when you go through security? Also, are you allowed to fly with a somewhat open wound? I read a recent article of a guy who was asked to leave the aircraft due to his bleeding after he had surgery.

Great question! I didn't even think about going through security and what would happen.
